Thursday, Sept 24, 2015 will be a not-soon-to-be forgotten date on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Hundreds of thousands are expected to gather to acknowledge Pope Francis’s momentous visit to the US as he delivers a first-ever papal address to the Joint Session of Congress.
But what makes this event even more memorable is the connection to the Pope’s Encyclical letter, Laudato Si, that he issued in June. In the encyclical, he calls for all citizens, corporations and countries to commit to better stewardship of the Earth.
This rally is for folks from all walks of life – religious or not, environmental or not, political or not. It is being sponsored by a non-profit group, Moral Action for Climate, because of the moral implications of what is happening to our environment, right now, with our “business as usual” path of putting unlimited amounts of carbon pollution into our atmosphere and how it disregards the health of our land, rivers and forests.
Make Way for Monarchs is glad to endorse the Moral Action on Climate Rally.
Make Way for Monarchs takes their endorsement one step further and invites families that are planning to attend the event, if they wish, to allow their children to “dress up” in outfits such as pollinators, animals or plants. The outfits need not be elaborate. They can be as simple as nature stickers on their shirts, carrying flowers or using some of the popular halloween-type outfits such as butterflies, honeybees, ladybugs, or bats.
Make Way for Monarchs has uploaded an album of photo ideas to their website for families who want to participate but may need ideas as to how to create the outfits or links to where they might be purchased for the event. These outfits could later be used as halloween outfits to raise awareness about pollinators if they so choose.
Make Way for Monarchs hopes to have a small troupe of “Pollinator Pals” – volunteers onsite on the National Mall on 9/24 with lots of free wildflower seed packets available to give away for those wishing to plant a butterfly garden. These NPS approved seed packets contain milkweed seeds and nectar plant seeds for creating Monarch Waystation Butterfly Gardens. These gardens can then be registered in the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge.
